From Where We Stand: Virtual Exhibit
Everything was set to go for our first event . . . and then a pandemic hit.
People all over the world were forced into isolation, schools and businesses closed their doors, and we waited. Initial joy at the unexpected time off quickly turned to fear and uncertainty. Two weeks turned to four, and then weeks turned to months.
And as the world slowed down, a spotlight glared on the blatant injustices and police brutality plaguing our country. Black people, as we’ve seen in our country time and time again, were being slain in the streets at the hands of our justice system. But this time, all the world was watching. As Americans, and all the world alike, social distanced on their couches and floors their eyes stayed fixed on screens. And soon, in the midst of a pandemic, as more buried issues arose clearer each day, the rage of decades of injustice and systemic racism took to a worldwide stage.
With so much going on in the world, we wanted to give young people an opportunity to share their voices. How were they feeling? What were they experiencing? What did they have to say? With our event postponed indefinitely, we took to social media to give young people a space to share their truths.
The idea was to create an exhibit that would serve as a youth commentary on the state of our world. We believe that creativity lives within each of us and that what we choose to create is deeply rooted in our own experiences. As an organization we are driven and inspired by the voices of young people, and are committed to providing spaces that encourage and amplify their voices.
Here’s what they had to say.
